Some Derby residents will see changes to their bin collection schedule starting February 17th with black bin changes.

The change affects eight streets in Mackworth. Brough Street, Campion Street, and Cecil Street are included. Langley Street, Leake Street, Peach Street, Stepping Lane and Wild Street will also change. Over 360 homes are affected.
The City Council is informing residents about this change. If you have a blue bin already, it’s just the black bin schedule that is changing. You get your black bin emptied every other week. If you lack a blue bin, one arrives free on February 10 with an explanation letter. Staff will answer any questions.
This change was discussed last June. The council hopes it will help the environment and cut down costs. The aim is also to prevent bins accumulating on streets, as the area has waste problems.
A report said recycling might increase due to this change. Residents can recycle more at home. Black bins are for general waste items like nappies, cat litter, and tissues. Blue bins are for recycling bottles, cans, and cardboard.
Derby’s standard collection is every two weeks. Black bin (general waste) is picked up then, as is the blue bin (recycling). They also collect the brown bin (organic waste) during this time.
Blue bins were removed from some areas, including Arboretum, Normanton, and Mackworth, back in 2013. This was due to contamination issues and bins left on the streets. In 2019, they decided to bring blue bins back as an optional service.
The prior report stated that reducing black bin pick ups and encouraging recycling is important. Recycling is cheaper than general waste pick up. The council hopes new recyclers won’t contaminate the waste.
