Belfast community leaders want earlier gate closures. They hope to curb ongoing problems. This affects gates at three streets: Northumberland, Townsend, and North Howard.

These gates separate West Belfast and Shankill and are at the center of community talks. The talks concern opening and closing times.

Leaders and workers agree on earlier closures, aiming to stop youths gathering. Sometimes, they gather for planned fights. One idea closes two gates at 6 p.m. for six weeks, while the third gate might close later. Currently, all close at 8:30 p.m.

Sources say youths move between gates, using bikes to avoid police and threatening the gate closer to keep the gate open longer. Police are often too busy to respond fast.

Locals near the gates suffer most. The Department of Justice does not consult them. A city meeting will discuss these issues next month at the Girdwood site. Community groups need more youth worker funding to reduce tension before summer.

A local councilor called the incidents shameful, stating the problems affect more residents now. He said police lack staff for constant presence, and he wants early gate closures. This would allow other solutions to work.

A political leader stated the youth behavior is bad and it must stop. Locals deserve peace. He urges parents to know where their kids are and to discuss good behavior.

Police recorded twelve anti-social acts and noted four public order offenses. They arrested three men, gave one person a warning, and informed parents of seven youths.

Police are aware of reports of anti-social behavior near the three streets’ interfaces. They investigate these reports and offenders will face court. Police patrols are increasing, aiming to deter such behavior, as community safety comes first. Police asked parents to talk to their kids and discourage risky behavior that could result in injury.

The Department of Justice knows of the problems and is watching the situation. They stay in touch with the police. The gates still operate normally currently.
