Belfast Council is thinking about a music fund. The fund would help local musicians and venues. They are looking at Bristol’s “Bristol Nights” model. Bristol Nights is from a council in England.

Séamas de Faoite proposed the idea. He is an SDLP Councillor. Belfast Council will talk to Bristol Nights. They want to add a small charge to music tickets. This charge would be one percent. It would create money for Belfast’s music scene.

De Faoite spoke at a council meeting in February. He said Bristol studied creating the music fund. They worked with venues and promoters. They planned to add one percent to ticket prices. This was for all live music in Bristol. Bristol hasn’t started yet.

They plan to use the money to support music. The support would help independent venues. It would also promote music for young people. Music skill development is another goal. De Faoite and Brian Smyth talked to music venues. They see a need for ongoing support.

The council has done things like the UNESCO City of Music. He thinks working with Bristol Nights is worthwhile. He wants to see if they can copy the plan.

Conor McKay is a Sinn Féin Councillor. He wants music access for everyone. He mentioned people from lower income families. He wants to make sure they get involved. He wants to include those unfamiliar with music.

De Faoite said Bristol Nights covers this. Their project includes access to music. He said it’s a core part of their plan. Getting more people involved grows the whole music scene.

A council officer said they contacted Bristol before. This was about Belfast’s UNESCO music status. They will keep talking about Bristol Nights. They will study Glasgow’s plan too. Glasgow puts a levy on large concerts. This money goes to a venue trust fund.
