The plans also include homes for locals and a new mortgage guarantee. Tougher landlord rules are also in the budget. The town centre will get a large regeneration that will include shops, homes, and a hotel.
The council might fire its repair firm if issues persist past Christmas. Wickford police station will reopen as a safety hub. New CCTV cameras will appear to help tackle crime.
The leader mentioned many changes this year, including a new government in Westminster and a newly elected MP. Local government will reorganize soon, and Basildon Council will be abolished after 50 years.
He feels Basildon can still be great and people can feel proud to live there. He wants young people to be able to start families and businesses. He wants strong infrastructure so people feel their council is on their side.
Andrew Baggott, the Tory opposition leader, said the budget is a “smoke and mirrors” show. He stated that play area upgrades got canceled and claimed that borrowing is out of control and the council could face financial ruin soon.
