Bristol’s Ashton Court Mansion needs help. A meeting explored ways to save this famous building. It featured in the Big Brother reboot. It’s in bad shape, so they cannot use much of it.

Past ideas failed, including proposals for a hotel or spa. Politicians and experts met at the mansion to discuss how to use it. Historic England organized the meeting. The group listed it as “At Risk” in 2011, and its condition has worsened since then.

New MP Sadik Al-Hassan attended, expressing his desire to find a solution. He called the mansion magnificent with potential and appreciates the council’s insights. Continued talks are planned, he noted.

Historic England said the visit helped discussions. They talked challenges and opportunities and hope to find a new use that respects the building’s heritage.

The council has owned it since 1959. They started consulting with local groups. The upstairs is off-limits due to disrepair, while the downstairs hall hosts events. These range from court overflow to bagpipe lessons.

Council leader Tony Dyer spoke, noting that many have memories of the mansion and recognize its personal and historical value. He looks forward to further talks as they want to protect it for years.

The mansion’s core dates to the 1400s. The Smyth family extended it later on. The council bought it in 1959 while it was declining. It was a hospital in World War I and served as a camp in World War II.
