Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter receives a much-needed roof renovation and volunteer hub thanks to a grant.

Good news: they got a new roof for their main office, and were also able to build an excellent volunteer hub. This was all thanks to a special grant that came from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The local council is working with VODA to manage this fund, which is provided by the UK government. It helps different projects within the area. The local council invested over £1.2 million, which went to local groups that provide aid in specific neighborhoods as part of a plan to improve the area.
The animal shelter started way back in 1896, and they take care of animals that get lost, abandoned, or mistreated. They cover the whole North East region, reuniting pets with owners and finding new homes.
The shelter’s leader said the roof was essential because storms often damaged the old one, and the staff couldn’t work well in such conditions. Helping animals comes first, but the team must have good facilities too. Roof repairs weren’t an option, but a whole new roof was very costly.
The grant paid for the new volunteer hub, transforming an empty, roofed shell into a comfy space. Volunteers now have a safe place on the grounds, with added lockers, training space, and a small kitchen, allowing them to relax in a nice space.
Another grant will help with their Christmas market, for which they’ll use portable toilets. It’s a key community fundraiser, and will get people to volunteer in their shops and shelter. Volunteers are truly indispensable, and the team’s commitment is amazing.
A local official stated the shelter does crucial work, caring for animals a lot, and volunteers improve their mental health by helping. The council is happy they aided in providing the roof, and are also pleased that the hub was created.
The UKSPF aims to boost local pride and connections, desiring better opportunities across the UK. This occurs by investing where people live, supporting local businesses and skills.
