A47 Speed Limits Slashed in £6m Safety Scheme, Cameras Installed
National Highways wants safer roads for everyone. The project focuses on the area between Peterborough and King’s Lynn. The first section, Wisbech to King’s Lynn, should finish in May; work will then shift eastward.
Next, they’ll work from Guyhirn to Wisbech (May-July). After that, Peterborough to Guyhirn is scheduled (July-November). The whole project should wrap up this winter, and these changes mainly impact 60 mph zones.
Several spots will now have lower speed limits. From Welland Road roundabout to Oversley Lodge, it’s now 50 mph; Thorney New Cut roundabout to Thorney Toll is now 50 mph too. Thorney Toll village will drop to 40 mph, and Thorney Toll to Guyhirn becomes 50 mph.
Also, Guyhirn to Wisbech will change to 50 mph. Finally, Shoreboat Roundabout to Pullover roundabout goes to 50 mph.
The changes will reduce accidents, they say. Martin Fellows said safety matters most. He also says the lower limits keep traffic moving well and thinks roads will become safer.
Expect overnight work during the week, usually running from 8 PM to 6 AM, weather permitting. Allow extra travel time due to closures.
Eastbound drivers between Wisbech and King’s Lynn use a detour during the overnight road work. They take A1101 at Wisbech Roundabout, then follow A1101 and A1122 to A10. Finally, rejoin A47 at Hardwick Roundabout. Westbound traffic reverses this route. All laybys close during the project on the A47, impacting from Elm High Road to Pullover Roundabout.
