The A4119 in Llantrisant is about to reopen, now a dual carriageway thanks to completed work. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council announced the reopening between Coed Ely and Ynysmaerdy. Expect it open before Monday, March 3 rush hour.

This project transformed part of the A4119. It now runs as a dual carriageway between two roundabouts—one serving Coed Ely, and the other, the Fire and Rescue Service. The aim is to reduce traffic during busy times and to boost the Rhondda Valleys economy, opening up the Welsh Government’s Parc Coed-Elai site. A new path has also been added for walkers and cyclists, featuring a shared bridge near Coed Ely roundabout.

Councillor Andrew Morgan addressed a meeting, mentioning the road was initially slated to open last September, with contractors later targeting a Christmas opening. However, weather slowed resurfacing and some work remained to finish, causing further delays.

Morgan clarified that the remaining work was off the road, and expected the road to open soon. He explained that the council needed to be satisfied with the work and contractors had to sign it over before opening.

The council urges drivers to exercise caution on the new road and adapt to the changed layout. The majority of the road has a 50mph speed limit, while a shorter section near the fire station is restricted to 40mph.

Funding for the project included £11.4 million from the UK Government’s Levelling-Up Fund, with the Council and Welsh Government also contributing. The contractor might need to do minor work later, and details regarding this will be shared with residents.

A council spokesperson shared that the A4119 will open as a dual carriageway between Coed Ely and Ynysmaerdy, with March 3 as the target date, and cones disappearing before Monday morning.

The council expressed gratitude for financial support, including the Levelling-Up Fund and Welsh Government contributions. Given the large number of drivers using this road weekly, this investment is expected to significantly benefit commuters and alleviate traffic congestion during peak hours.

The project increases the road’s capacity, which will help the Rhondda Valleys economy. Access to Parc Coed-Elái also improves, alongside the new paths for walking and cycling. The council acknowledged that the project took longer than anticipated.

The council also underscored the difficulty of providing precise dates for major projects and thanked everyone for their patience, from road users to residents. Emphasizing the importance of the final safety works, designed to ensure road users’ safety, the council required this completion before handover.
