Historic England supports plans to transform the former Grafton nightclub into 90 apartments, preserving the building’s facade.

They plan to turn the old nightclub into apartments, keeping the building’s front the same. Experts have approved these renovation plans. The city wants to build 90 apartments there. This six-story building will sit on West Derby Road, where The Grafton once stood.
The Grafton opened as a ballroom in 1924 and later became a popular nightclub. Now, it is empty because it closed years ago. The council supported the redevelopment but paused the plans briefly because they forgot to consult Historic England. Now, Historic England backs the project.
The council must consult this group because it is next to a protected building. Catherine Dewar spoke for Historic England, having received the plans in March.
Historic England does not object to the project because The Grafton is not a listed building. However, they protect the area around Olympia, a Grade II listed building. The new housing is beneficial. They value keeping the Grafton’s front. Historic England will work with the city to reuse Liverpool’s heritage.
Equans Regeneration shared their plans last year to build 90 apartments in a six-story building. There would be 47 one-bedroom apartments and 43 two-bedroom rentals. Sovini will manage the affordable housing.
The site has been empty for over 15 years, posing a safety risk and an eyesore. Brad Wiseman said it needs investment and he hopes to transform the site. New affordable homes will be available.
The project depends on funding from Homes England. Some work could start soon, but major construction awaits the grant money.
